Emlen Physick EstateIf you visit Cape May, be sure to tour the Physick Estate. The tour guides were knowledgeable and very friendly. (and very patient with our 8 year old son's questions) Don't miss the gift shop in the carriage house with it's Model T on display. Also, there is a teahouse in the back of the carriage house which serves tea and light fare. The house and grounds are extremely well kept. Off street parking is available. Many of the bed and breakfasts are close to the house so you may be able to simply walk or take the trolley. The guided tour provides insights into the daily lives of the early, wealthy visitors to Cape May. When we visited in 2003, there was no air conditioning in the house. However It was not uncomfortable. Emlen Physick was a noted personality and turn-of-the-century leader of the Cape May community. The interior of the house is the way it was in the early 1900's.
The tours are limited to the first and second floors.
The Physick Estate was saved from the wrecker's ball by the Mid Atlantic Center for the Arts and turned into a museum. They also are currently managing the Cape May Lighthouse.
