Review - Dinner, September 2005

I stopped in for a quick dinner on a weekday evening in early September. The Ugly Mug is right on the Washington Street Mall. Like many of the restaurants on the mall, they offer al fresco seating. At that time of the year a majority of the visitors are empty nester's who can take advantage of the beautiful weather and smaller crowds.

The Ugly Mug is known for the hundreds of personal mugs in there ceiling for regular patrons. Inside is a bar area and a fairly large dining room. Outside there are about a dozen tables. The atmosphere is very casual.

It took a little while to get seated. It appeared that they might have been a little shorthanded. I ordered their broiled scallops with rice and applesauce. It didn't take long for the meal to arrive. The dish is about a half pound of scallops which amounts to over a dozen nicely sized scallops. This is a real change from some of the more upscale restaurants where 4 scallops on a plate is considered a generous portion. The scallops were done to perfection. I didn't like the rice pilaf but that is a personal thing in that I don't like heavy spices. My wife would have loved it. Time constraints prevented me from spending the time for the dessert. At any rate the portions were large enough that there wasn't a whole lot of appetite left over.

The service was friendly and attentive once I was seated.

if you go:

  • As with any al fresco dining, be prepared for mosquitoes. When I ate there, they weren't present. However that can change.

  • Parking is tight. There is a municipal metered lot on Perry Street. Otherwise, if you are nearby, it is worth walking.

  • You are right in the middle of the mall so there is plenty to do before and after. An al fresco seat provides plenty of people watching opportunities.

Summary

This place definitely exceeded my expections and is on the 'return to' list.
