Breakfast - reviewed June 2004

The Mad Batter is in the Carroll Villa Bed and Breakfast and is about a half block from the beach.

We visited in the middle of the week in early June. The season hadn’t really kicked off so there wasn’t a wait. In fact there were a lot of empty tables.

There is seating on the front porch and the terrace in the rear. Neither the porch nor the enclosed terrace are air conditioned. There is also seating available in the air conditioned dining room.

They have a varied menu. I opted for the vanilla Belgian waffle (vanilla flavored batter with malted flour) ($6.25) and a side order of Country Ham. ($2.75) Our son ordered the same thing. The waffle was delicious as was the ham.

As with most of the Cape May restaurants, you are better off walking rather than driving.

The décor on the terrace was light and airy.

Our service was excellent but the couple at a table next to us seemed to have a missing waiter. The restaurant is informal and kid friendly.

For breakfast I had Eggs Benedict which is poached eggs on toasted English muffin with Canadian Bacon and Hollandaise sauce $8.75

We ate in the cheerful back dining room which had blue-green tile floors and blue-and-cloud painted ceilings. There was a small garden which you could see through the atrium windows.

Portions were large. Potatoes were crisp like thick potato chips.
