Buildings such as the one above we built for the U.S. Lifesaving Service. They typically housed several small surf boats. These buildings were build all along the eastern coast of the United States. When a ship was in danger or had foundered, the men would attempt to rescue the survivors using surfboats, Lyle guns and whatever other methods were available.
